CHAN 2024: Harambee Stars Players Earn Millions Following Quarter-Finals Qualification

Kenya’s national men’s football team, Harambee Stars, continue to reap significant financial rewards following their impressive performance in the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). After securing qualification to the quarter-finals, each player has earned roughly Ksh5 million since the tournament began.

The most notable incentives come from President William Ruto, who promised Ksh1 million for every win and Ksh500,000 for every draw. Harambee Stars have played three matches, winning two and drawing one, earning each player Ksh2.5 million from match results alone. The team also received Ksh60 million collectively for reaching the quarter-finals.

With 25 registered players and two retained players, Brian Musa and Swaleh Pemba, each squad member stands to receive about Ksh2.2 million from the quarter-final bonus.

Adding to the rewards, Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga pledged Ksh500,000 for each Harambee Stars player, raising their total earnings from the tournament to Ksh3 million apiece.

Beyond government and political incentives, MP Peter Salasya of Mumias East announced a personal reward for goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, pledging to cover his house rent for three months in recognition of his composure and crucial contributions, particularly in the landmark 1-0 victory over two-time champions Morocco.

“I will reward Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi by covering his house rent for three months. He is very composed and knows his work. I will just gift the goalkeeper; the other players will be gifted by Ruto,” Salasya stated.

Salasya further outlined an ambitious vision for the welfare of Harambee Stars players, promising that, if he wins the 2027 presidential election, every national team member would receive binding contracts with retirement benefits of at least Ksh70,000 per month, comprehensive medical packages, and starting salaries of Ksh450,000 per month, boosted by corporate sponsorships.

Earlier, President Ruto announced additional incentives ahead of Kenya’s crucial group stage match against Zambia, including a Ksh2.5 million cash reward per player and technical staff for a win, with further bonuses and homes under the Affordable Housing Programme if the team progresses beyond the quarter-finals.

Collectively, these rewards and pledges highlight growing recognition and support for Harambee Stars, with individual performances like Omondi’s being celebrated alongside the team’s achievements.
