Putin, Trump Discuss Boosting Ukraine Talks Representation, Kremlin Says

Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump have discussed the possibility of elevating the level of officials involved in ongoing Ukraine peace talks, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday.

According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the idea was raised during a 40-minute phone call between the two leaders, which took place after Trump’s meeting in Washington on Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European partners.

“The idea was discussed that it would be worthwhile to explore the possibility of raising the level of representatives from the Ukrainian and Russian sides, that is, those representatives participating in the mentioned direct negotiations,” Ushakov said in remarks posted on the Kremlin’s official Telegram channel.

Trump described his meeting with Zelenskyy as “very good” and revealed he had initiated steps toward arranging a potential meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy. However, Ushakov did not clarify whether the discussions would expand into a direct trilateral summit.

“Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump agreed to maintain close contact with each other on the Ukrainian issue and other pressing topics on the international and bilateral agenda,” Ushakov added, characterizing the exchange as “frank and highly constructive.”

During Monday’s talks, Trump assured Zelenskyy that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine’s security in any settlement aimed at ending Russia’s war. The exact scope of Washington’s commitment, however, remains unclear.

The fresh diplomatic push comes amid heightened global scrutiny over efforts to end the conflict, with Washington and Moscow signaling cautious openness to new formats of dialogue.
