EACC Arrests Three Kenya Power Officials Over Bribery Allegations

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three officials from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes in exchange for services.

The suspects—Mr. Jeremiah Onchuru Omwenga, an accountant based at Electricity House, and two technicians, Mr. Jeremiah Omondi Masiwa and Mr. John Mutuku Mutua—were apprehended in separate operations mounted by the Commission.

According to EACC, Mr. Omwenga is accused of demanding a bribe of Ksh200,000 to alter a disputed electricity bill of Ksh346,000. He was arrested while allegedly receiving the money following a complaint lodged with the Commission.

In another sting operation at Woodley Estate, Nairobi, Mr. Masiwa and Mr. Mutua were arrested after they reportedly received a Ksh10,000 bribe from a resident in exchange for an irregular power reconnection.

The three were processed at the Integrity Centre Police Station before being released on a Ksh50,000 bond each, pending the conclusion of investigations.

In a statement, the EACC reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out corruption within public service institutions.

“The Commission reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points to restore public confidence and enhance service delivery to all Kenyans,” the statement read.
