England manager Thomas Tuchel has ruled out recalling Mason Greenwood, saying the forward is “not in our thoughts” as the player continues to weigh up his international future.
Greenwood, 23, left Manchester United after charges including attempted rape and assault were dropped in February 2023. He went on loan to Spanish side Getafe before sealing a permanent move to Marseille in 2024, where he has impressed with 23 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Despite earning his only England cap in 2020, Greenwood began the process of switching allegiance to Jamaica, securing a passport but stopping short of completing FIFA’s paperwork. That hesitation has frustrated Jamaica coach Steve McClaren, who had hoped to include him in World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago.
Tuchel confirmed he has not approached Greenwood, insisting his focus is elsewhere. “I have not spoken to him until now. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica, so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team,” Tuchel told reporters.
McClaren admitted Jamaica will need to be patient, saying Greenwood wants to focus on club football for now. “We will keep the contact, we will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica. But at the moment, he’s not going to commit to anybody,” McClaren said.
Greenwood’s international future remains uncertain, with both England and Jamaica waiting on his decision.
