Ruto Leads Kenyans in Mourning Veteran Politician Dalmas Otieno

Kenya is mourning the death of former Cabinet Minister and long-serving Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno Anyango, who passed away at his Nairobi home on Saturday, September 6, 2025, aged 80.

His son, Eddy Otieno, confirmed the news, sparking an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum.

President William Ruto described Otieno as a “visionary leader” who served with “honour, integrity and distinction,” while Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi called him “a remarkable leader whose devotion to public service left a lasting mark.”

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula praised his calm intellect and ability to bridge divides, hailing him as “a voice of reason and principled leadership.”

Otieno, known for his sharp mind and progressive vision, held several Cabinet positions under different regimes, including as Labour Minister and later as Planning and National Development Minister. He was also at one point Kenya’s special envoy to South Sudan.

Leaders recalled his diligence and quiet influence in shaping policy. ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga called him “a pivotal figure in Kenya’s political landscape,” while Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir described him as an “eminent figure in Kenya’s democratic struggle.”

Otieno’s political career spanned decades, from the KANU era through the multiparty transition, where he remained a respected voice even after retreating from frontline politics. Beyond public office, he was remembered as a mentor and thinker. Eliud Owalo, Deputy Chief of Staff, recalled working with him for over three decades, most recently on the Nyanza International Investment Conference.

Even after leaving active politics, Otieno retained influence in policy and grassroots organisation, occasionally weighing in on national debates. Many leaders noted his humility, intellect, and quiet discipline — traits that won him admiration beyond party lines.

As tributes poured in, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris summed up the mood: “His legacy of public service and transformative leadership will be remembered with reverence and gratitude.”

Otieno is survived by his family, who are expected to announce funeral arrangements in the coming days.
