Law Society Mourns Prominent Lawyer Assassinated in Karen South

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has condemned the brutal assassination of prominent lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, describing his killing as a grave attack on the legal fraternity and the rule of law.

Mr Mbobu, a respected advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over three decades of practice, was gunned down on 9 September 2025 in a drive-by shooting. The assailant fled the scene on a motorcycle.

In a strongly worded statement, LSK president Faith Odhiambo said the profession was “profoundly grieved” by the murder, which she described as a premeditated attack. “The legal profession mourns a distinguished member of dedicated service and demonstrable legal excellence,” she said, adding that Mr Mbobu’s contributions to law, governance, and legal education had left an indelible mark.

Mr Mbobu previously chaired the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal and lectured at the University of Nairobi. LSK praised his scholarship, particularly in the field of evidence law, and his mentorship of young advocates.

The society expressed alarm over rising insecurity targeting lawyers, warning that intimidation and violence against advocates posed “a damning test to the administration of justice.” It called for urgent investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to apprehend the perpetrators.

“The effective discharge of constitutional functions by advocates requires an environment free of fear and persecution,” Ms Odhiambo said. “We decry this detestable act and demand that the perpetrators be hunted down and brought to book.”

LSK urged the government to address the “calamitous levels of insecurity” facing professionals and the public, warning that unchecked crime risks pushing the country to the edge of lawlessness.

Mr Mbobu’s killing has reignited debate about the safety of advocates in Kenya, many of whom handle politically sensitive and high-stakes cases.
