Police arrest suspect, recover 35 stolen sheep in Laikipia

Police in Laikipia North have arrested one person of interest and recovered 35 stolen sheep following a coordinated security operation led by a multi-agency team from Buuri West Sub-County, Meru County.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that a recovery was made in the Chumvi area after two livestock owners reported theft of animals in separate incidents.

“The Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) for Buuri West led the joint team in the targeted operation, which was prompted by reports from two livestock owners who had lost animals in separate theft incidents,” read the statement.

Furthermore, the NPS reported that the recovered sheep have since been secured and returned to their rightful owners.

The person of interest, who was arrested at the scene, is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court.

The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding communities through intensified operations aimed at curbing livestock theft and other criminal activities.

“We remain committed to protecting lives, property, and livelihoods. Such coordinated efforts will continue to be undertaken to ensure communities are safe from crime,” NPS said.

In a statement on Friday, August 15, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that the recovery comes after a series of livestock thefts and retaliatory raids in the region.

According to NPS, cattle rustlers stole five cows from a resident, prompting herdsmen from the affected community to raid the Lurubae area of Archer’s Post, making away with an unknown number of goats and sheep in early August.

Both incidents were reported to Isiolo Police Station and Archer’s Post Police Station, triggering coordinated efforts by the National Police Service, National Government Administration Officers, and respected elders from both sides.

“Yesterday, the recovered livestock were formally handed over to their rightful owners in a brief meeting held at Ngaremara Centre. The handover was attended by the OCS Archers Post, the Assistant Chief of Attan Location (Ngaremara Division), community elders, and local leaders,” read the statement in part.

Furthermore, the police stated that the handover served as a symbol of reconciliation, with stakeholders pledging to promote peace and prevent further incidents of rustling.
