Resident in West Pokot Surrenders Illegal Firearm to Authorities

By Michelle Ndaga

Security officers in West Pokot County have received an illegal firearm following its voluntary surrender by a local resident, marking a significant step in efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit weapons in the region.

The firearm, an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing five rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, was surrendered on September 15, 2025, in Rorok Village, Kositot Sub-Location of Cheptulel Location.

According to authorities, the weapon was handed over through the Assistant County Commissioner, Chesegon Division, and the area Assistant Chief before being secured by security agencies for safe custody pending further administrative action.

The National Police Service (NPS) commended the move, describing it as a positive demonstration of community cooperation in advancing peace and security.

The Service emphasized that voluntary disarmament is critical in reducing insecurity and fostering lasting stability in pastoral areas historically affected by cattle rustling and armed violence.

NPS further encouraged individuals still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily, assuring them of safe handling.
