KETRACO names Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias acting CEO after Mativo exit

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has appointed Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as its acting managing director and chief executive officer, following the exit of Dr Eng. John Muoki Mativo.

The appointment, effective 19 September, was confirmed in a statement by board chair Capt Mohamed Abdi, who said the decision was reached after consultations with Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.

“The Board of Directors wishes to inform the public of the appointment of Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as the Acting Managing Director/CEO of KETRACO with effect from 19th September 2025,” Capt Abdi said. He also thanked Dr Mativo for his “invaluable service and contribution” to the state corporation, which oversees the development and management of Kenya’s electricity transmission network.

Kibias, who previously served as KETRACO’s general manager for system operation and power management, brings more than two decades of experience in the energy sector. His career spans design, construction, system planning, operations, and maintenance. Before joining KETRACO, he worked in senior roles at Kenya Power, including regional and county manager positions.

Academically, Kibias holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture, an MBA in Strategic Management from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, and a Master’s in Nuclear Power Plant Engineering from KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School in South Korea. He is also pursuing a PhD in Energy Studies at Moi University.

He is registered as a professional engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya, is a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, and sits on the Nuclear Committee of the Federation of African Engineering Organizations.

KETRACO is responsible for high-voltage electricity transmission across the country and plays a central role in strengthening Kenya’s power infrastructure.
