Teargas, Tension and Fresh Hopes as Gor Mahia Kick Off New Season

Police clashed with sections of Gor Mahia supporters at Kasarani on Sunday, briefly disrupting the build-up to the club’s opening Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) fixture against Bidco United.

Videos circulating on social media showed fans scattering as police lobbed teargas at them outside the stadium gates. Some supporters were seen scaling fences in a desperate bid to access the venue. Calm was restored minutes later, with police eventually allowing fans into the stadium under heavy guard.

The ugly scenes came as Gor Mahia launched their 2025/26 league campaign under new head coach Charles Akonnor. The former Ghana captain and Black Stars coach was appointed after a barren season in which K’Ogalo, the record 21-time Kenyan champions, failed to lift any silverware.

Akonnor’s arrival has injected optimism into the fan base and management, who see him as the man to restore Gor’s dominance in both domestic and continental football. The club has bolstered its squad with several signings, including foreign defenders expected to provide much-needed stability at the back.

The opening clash against Bidco United was billed as the first real test of Akonnor’s tactical vision and the new recruits’ impact.

Fans, undeterred by the pre-match confrontation with police, turned out in large numbers, signalling enduring loyalty to a club that has long embodied passion and tradition in Kenyan football.

With eyes firmly set on clinching a record 22nd FKF-PL title, Gor Mahia’s leadership has stressed the need to not only win but also build a side capable of consistent performances on the CAF stage.
