Martha Karua Turns 68, Receives Regional Tributes for Decades of Advocacy

Kenyan opposition leader and veteran human rights advocate Martha Karua marked her 68th birthday on September 22, 2025, with messages of gratitude and celebration.

In a social media post, Karua expressed thanks for life and blessings, reflecting on her journey in public service and activism.

Tributes poured in from across East Africa, with supporters, politicians, and activists from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania hailing her as a steadfast defender of democracy and justice.

Many praised her long record as a lawyer, parliamentarian, and cabinet minister, where she became known for defending political dissidents, advancing constitutional reforms, and taking a firm stance against corruption.

Karua’s pivotal role in Kenya’s post-election negotiations, as well as her founding of the People’s Liberation Party, were highlighted as milestones in her political career. Beyond her formal positions, she has continued to inspire women and youth across the region to engage in leadership and rights advocacy.
