Members of the Judiciary paid tribute to the late Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng in a solemn candle-lighting ceremony led by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Daniel Musinga.
The ceremony brought together Judges of the Court of Appeal, judicial officers and staff members, who gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the distinguished jurist.
Speaking during the event, Justice Musinga described the flickering candle flames as profound symbols representing life, wisdom and the enduring pursuit of justice grounded in integrity.
“As the flame rises,” he said, “may it remind us of the Hon. Judge’s unwavering commitment to fairness, truth and the rule of law. Though his earthly journey has ended, his legacy continues to inspire us. We who remain are called to carry forward the torch of justice, to uphold the values he cherished and ensure that his contribution to jurisprudence endures.”
Justice Ochieng was widely respected for his sharp legal mind, humility and steadfast dedication to the rule of law. Over the course of his career, he authored numerous landmark decisions that shaped Kenyan jurisprudence, earning admiration from colleagues, lawyers and litigants alike.
The candlelight ceremony provided an opportunity not only to mourn his loss but also to reflect on the principles he stood for. He’s colleagues remembered him as a jurist who dispensed justice with both wisdom and compassion, leaving behind an indelible mark on the Judiciary and the country’s legal system.
Justice Ochieng’s passing has been described as a great loss to the Bench and the nation. Yet, as Justice Musinga emphasized, his values, writings and service will continue to guide future generations of judges and legal practitioners.
