Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as “Bahubali,” has died at the age of 28, just 11 days after suffering a technical knockout (TKO) defeat.
Akushey passed away early Monday at Lekma Hospital in Accra, according to his family, who confirmed the news but said the exact cause of death is yet to be established. His fatal bout took place on September 12 at Bukom Boxing Arena, where he lost to Jacob Dickson.
The Chorkor-born fighter turned professional in 2023 and quickly built a reputation as a fearless competitor, holding a 5–3 professional record.
His death has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s boxing community and reignited concerns about the safety of athletes in the sport.
Akushey’s passing marks the second high-profile boxing-related death in Ghana this year, intensifying calls for enhanced medical checks and post-fight monitoring for boxers.
Tributes have poured in from fans and fellow athletes, celebrating him as a local hero and inspiration for young fighters.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
