“EU Launches ‘I’ve Got the Power’ Campaign in Kenya to Boost Renewable Energy Access”

The European Union (EU) has unveiled its I’ve Got the Power campaign in Kenya, highlighting a growing partnership aimed at delivering affordable and sustainable energy solutions to communities across the country.

The initiative celebrates shared efforts between the EU and Kenya to promote renewable energy while driving economic and social transformation.

At the heart of the campaign is the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy, which underpins projects such as the Last Mile Connectivity Programme.

This initiative is expanding electricity access in rural Kenya by linking households close to distribution transformers to the national grid. Operating across 32 counties, the programme is helping families, schools and small businesses transition away from polluting fuels while supporting Kenya’s universal electrification agenda.

Henriette Geiger, the EU Ambassador to Kenya, said the campaign is about more than just infrastructure. “The transition to renewable energy is not just about reducing carbon emissions; it’s about creating a more sustainable future for the people, the planet, and local economies,” she noted.

Real-life stories highlight the impact: fashion designer Austin says reliable electricity has allowed him to grow his workshop business, while boda boda rider Catheline has switched to an electric bike for deliveries, cutting costs and boosting her income.

The campaign also connects to a wider continental push, led by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, under the Scaling up Renewables in Africa pledging campaign.

With millions still lacking access to electricity, the EU hopes Kenya’s progress will inspire broader adoption of clean, reliable power across Africa, creating jobs and supporting long-term development.
