The Sh6.2 billion Athi River–Machakos turnoff dual carriageway has been completed and officially handed over to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), marking a major milestone in improving transport along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway.
The 20-kilometre project, co-funded by the Government of Kenya and the World Bank on a 60:40 basis, features modern interchanges, bridges, footbridges, and an upgraded drainage system to handle heavy traffic volumes and reduce delays.
Nation Africa reports that traffic congestion on the route has already eased significantly, cutting travel times and lowering transport costs for motorists and businesses.
The improved road is expected to enhance road safety and streamline logistics on one of the country’s most critical trade corridors.
The completion is also spurring rapid economic activity, with new commercial outlets, eateries, and residential developments emerging along the corridor. Local business owners say the improved infrastructure is attracting more customers and investors, unlocking the area’s economic potential.
The project had faced multiple delays due to land acquisition disputes, compensation challenges, and disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. With these issues resolved, KeNHA says it is now focused on routine maintenance to ensure the road remains in optimal condition.
Officials and stakeholders have hailed the dual carriageway as a key step toward decongesting the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, supporting trade, and driving regional development.
