Kenya and U.S. Deepen Health Cooperation Under New Global Strategy

By Michelle Ndaga

Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale today held talks with the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Kenya, H.E. Susan M. Burns, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in health under the newly launched America First Global Health Strategy (AFGHS).

The strategy, designed to sustain the legacy of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), was highlighted as a cornerstone of global health progress.

Since its inception, PEPFAR has saved more than 26 million lives and prevented 7.8 million HIV-positive births worldwide, significantly easing the HIV/AIDS burden in Kenya and across the globe.

The discussions also focused on regional health priorities in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to address cross-border health challenges and promote sustainable development.

Both Kenya and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to advancing health cooperation. The U.S. pledged continued support for Kenya’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC), aligning with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

In turn, the Ministry of Health reiterated its commitment to reforms, innovation, and global partnerships that strengthen systems and improve the well-being of citizens.

Hon. Duale was accompanied by Mr. Tim Trenkle, Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, during the high-level meeting.
