Security agencies in Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties have recovered two illegal firearms following voluntary surrenders by members of the public on October 3, 2025, in a development hailed as a boost to peace efforts in the North Rift region.
In Baringo County, a firearm was handed over in Tiaty Central Sub-County through the local administration before being secured by the sub-county security team. Authorities noted that the recovery is part of ongoing enforcement under Operation Rudisha Bunduki, a government-led initiative aimed at mopping up illegal weapons.
In Elgeyo Marakwet County, another firearm along with an empty magazine was surrendered in Marakwet East Sub-County. The weapon was received by security officers working in partnership with community leaders.
Officials said the recoveries reflect growing trust between residents and security agencies, as well as the role of community elders in encouraging compliance.
They also reaffirmed that the government remains committed to fostering peace and disarmament in the North Rift, an area that has in the past been plagued by armed conflict and cattle rustling.
Security teams have urged more residents in possession of illegal firearms to follow suit and support efforts to stabilize the region.
