The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has appointed Mr. Edward Maina Muriuki as the Acting Director of Meteorological Services following the retirement of Dr. David Gikungu on July 28, 2025.
The announcement was made by Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Environment and Climate Change.
Mr. Muriuki, a seasoned meteorologist with over three decades of experience, has served in several senior roles within the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).
He holds a Master of Science degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrology, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.
Since joining KMD in 1991, he has held multiple technical and administrative positions, including Senior Assistant Director, Deputy Director of Technical and Support Services, Principal of the World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Centre in Nairobi, and Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Services.
In a statement, Mr. Muriuki described the appointment as a major milestone in his career.
“I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya. Together with our staff and partners, we aim to strengthen weather and climate service delivery across the country,” he said.
Mr. Muriuki assumes office at a critical time when Kenya faces mounting climate challenges and a growing demand for accurate weather information.
His appointment is expected to bolster efforts to implement the Early Warning for All initiative, a global campaign aimed at improving preparedness for extreme weather events.
The Ministry expressed confidence that Mr. Muriuki’s extensive expertise will help the department fulfill its mandate to safeguard lives, protect property, and conserve the environment through timely and reliable meteorological information.
