Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has praised the Government Chemist Department for its critical role in advancing forensic science and supporting national investigations.
During a courtesy visit to the department’s headquarters in Nairobi, Dr Omollo assessed service delivery in forensic science, toxicology, and DNA analysis, commending the team for their professionalism and precision in handling complex cases.
He highlighted their contribution to major national investigations, including the Shakahola exhumations and the Kwa Bi Nzano tragedy, where DNA profiling helped bring closure to affected families.
“The Government Chemist has demonstrated professionalism and precision in every case handled. Their work is vital to our justice system and public safety,” Dr Omollo said.
The PS emphasized the need for continuous capacity building, modern laboratory investment, and stronger inter-agency collaboration to further enhance the delivery of forensic services and strengthen Kenya’s criminal justice system.

The Government Chemist, Forensic Science and Analytical Laboratory Services serves as the central testing laboratory for the Republic of Kenya, with regional centres in Mombasa, Kisumu, and Marsabit.
It provides forensic science and analytical laboratory services to the criminal justice system, public health, and environmental protection sectors.
It also acts as Kenya’s National Focal Point for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and serves as the Secretariat for the National CBRN Centre of Excellence.
Earlier this year, 18 new officers were gazetted as designated analysts by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen—the largest single deployment in recent years.
With this addition, the Government Chemist now boasts over 80 specialists in sampling, analysis, certification, and destruction of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
