Babu Owino Denies Leaving ODM for Wiper, Urges Opposition Unity

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called on opposition leaders to put aside their differences and unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Elections, warning that internal divisions could weaken their chances of victory.

Speaking on Radio Maisha on Thursday morning, Babu urged figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i to engage in dialogue and agree on one flag bearer.

“Even the opposition can win it, but they should stop small disagreements. They should unite and produce one candidate. Without unity, it won’t be easy for the opposition,” Babu said.

The MP dismissed the broad-based government concept, insisting there was no reason to support it, and accused President William Ruto of betraying his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, by allegedly orchestrating his impeachment.

“Gachagua was betrayed by Ruto just like I was betrayed by ODM. I hate betrayal in politics,” he said.

Babu’s remarks come a day after he denied claims of defecting from ODM to join Wiper, following his appearance at a Kalonzo Musyoka event. Speaking on Radio Citizen, he clarified that his association with Kalonzo was personal and not political.

“Even if you put politics aside, what has Kalonzo done wrong? Just because I communicate with him doesn’t mean I’ve become rude,” Babu said, adding that he believes Kalonzo’s resilience makes him the strongest candidate to challenge President Ruto in 2027.
