The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an alert regarding a weakening low-pressure system named CHENGE that continues to drift westward over the northern Mozambique Channel.
The system, located roughly 500 kilometres north of Madagascar, has been classified as a residual depression following a period of gradual weakening.
Despite its reduced strength, KMD has cautioned that CHENGE could still influence local weather conditions across southern coastal Kenya and parts of Tanzania early next week.
The department warned that moisture carried by the system may lead to heavy rainfall in several parts of the country, particularly along coastal regions.
Meteorologists project that the southern coast could experience strong winds exceeding 25 knots on Monday and Tuesday as the system continues to lose intensity. The rains are likely to bring localised flooding in low-lying areas and may disrupt marine and fishing activities.
In its public statement, KMD urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Fishermen, boat operators, and coastal communities have been advised to monitor official weather updates closely and avoid venturing into the open sea during the peak of the disturbance.
The department added that while the system is not expected to make landfall in Kenya, its residual effects could still trigger turbulent sea conditions and intense rainfall in the wider coastal belt. Authorities have been urged to prepare for possible emergencies related to flooding and wind damage.
KMD assured the public that it will continue to provide timely updates as CHENGE dissipates over the coming days. The department’s experts emphasised the importance of following verified meteorological information to avoid misinformation circulating online during severe weather events.
