Arsenal’s march to the top of the Premier League has gathered unstoppable momentum, and it is becoming increasingly clear why many now see them as the team to beat this season.

Their improvement over last year’s campaign is striking. Against Newcastle, West Ham, Fulham and Crystal Palace, fixtures that cost them 10 points last season , the Gunners have taken maximum points this time around.

Those costly stumbles in 2024 saw them finish second to Liverpool by a 10-point margin, their third consecutive runners-up spot.

This term, the transformation has been ruthless. Arsenal have already faced Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle away, as well as Manchester City at home, yet remain four points clear at the summit ahead of Bournemouth.

Their rivals, meanwhile, are floundering, it is the first time since 1992 that none of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool or Chelsea are in the top four at this stage.

“They are brilliant,” said former City defender Nedum Onuoha on BBC Radio 5 Live. “They’ve had the most shots, conceded the fewest goals and the fewest chances. They deserve to be top.”

Mikel Arteta’s side, rebuilt with around £250 million spent on eight summer signings, are now combining their trademark intensity with defensive steel. Despite injuries, they boast the tightest back line in the division and are among the league’s highest scorers.

“Arsenal can do a bit of everything now,” said Theo Walcott. “People are afraid of them. There’s belief throughout the club.” Former England striker Ellen White described them as a “juggernaut, looking difficult to stop.”

After years of near-misses, Arsenal finally look ready to turn potential into dominance.
