Kenya’s celebrated former middle distance runner and academic Professor Mike Kipsugut Boit, has told a court in Eldoret how his trusted driver allegedly defrauded him of KSh1.4 million from his personal accounts in Kapsabet and Eldoret.
Testifying before Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the 76 year old retired Kenyatta University lecturer in Exercise and Sports Science recounted how his driver, Kevin Kipruto Lagat, secretly obtained his M-pesa pin and used it to drain money from his bank accounts over a series of transactions spanning three years.
Boit said he had entrusted Lagat with personal errands, including handling his phone during mobile transactions, unaware that he was memorizing his pin for later misuse. He told the court that his driver exploited this trust and transferred large sums of money from his KCB accounts without his knowledge.
According to his testimony, the accused used the mobile phone number of a deceased individual, who reportedly died 15 years ago, to disguise the fraudulent transfers.
Court records show that Lagat allegedly accessed Boit’s KCB account and illegally transferred Ksh 550,304, before making another unauthorized transfer of Ksh 480,000 from a separate account in Nandi Hills.
The alleged offences were committed between December 23, 2023 and January 27, 2025, in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County.
Boit reported the matter at Naiberi Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub County, where investigations were launched leading to Lagat’s arrest.
Lagat, who is represented by lawyer Tecla Tum, has denied all the charges before the court.
The case will proceed on January 26, 2026, for further hearing.
