Britain’s Prince William urged renewed optimism and action in tackling global environmental challenges during the fifth edition of the Earthshot Prize ceremony held in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.
The event, marking the prince’s first official visit to Latin America, took place just days before Brazil hosts the COP30 UN climate summit in the Amazonian city of Belem next week.
“I understand that some might feel discouraged in these uncertain times,” William said during the ceremony. “I understand that there is still so much to be done. But this is no time for complacency, and the optimism I felt in 2020 remains ardent today.”
Founded by Prince William in 2020 and inspired by a visit to Namibia, the Earthshot Prize draws its name from U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s “moonshot” vision.
It seeks to catalyze major environmental breakthroughs by 2030, awarding five winners each year £1 million ($1.3 million) to develop innovative solutions for climate change and sustainability.
The glittering ceremony featured performances by global stars Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes, as well as Brazilian icons Gilberto Gil, Seu Jorge, and Anitta.
Former Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan were also in attendance.
During his visit, Prince William announced new initiatives supporting Indigenous communities and environmental activists in Brazil. He also toured several of Rio’s landmarks, reinforcing his message of hope and global cooperation in the face of the climate crisis.
William is set to represent his father, King Charles III, a longtime environmental advocate, at next week’s COP30 summit, where he is expected to highlight the role of innovation and international collaboration in protecting the planet.
