Kisii woman gives birth to quadruplets, names them Raila, Amolo, Odinga and Ida

A woman in Kisii has named her newborn quadruplets after the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, and the fourth, a girl, after Mama Ida Odinga.

According to the mother, the pregnancy came with unexpected surprises and significant challenges that tested her resilience throughout the journey.

The mother, Vane Nyanchoka Ontweka, revealed that she had been preparing for triplets after an ultrasound scan indicated she was carrying three babies. However, it was only during the cesarean section that medical staff discovered there was actually a fourth child.

“With this pregnancy, I didn’t expect it to be four, but after the ultrasound, we found out it was three. So it was three until we did the operation. That is when they recognized it is four and I had prepared for three,” she explained.

She described the pregnancy as an arduous experience that pushed her to her limits.

“The journey has not been so good. It has been challenging for me. It has been such a tough journey, especially during the pregnancy, but we thank God.”

The mother’s sister shared that the birth came at an emotionally charged time for the family, coinciding with the mourning period following Raila Odinga’s passing. Speaking about the dramatic moment, she recounted how the discovery of the fourth baby transformed their grief into celebration.

“We were a bit tense, and that is the time when we had just lost Raila. We were just mourning Raila, our hero, and then Doc made a decision that my sister goes in for a cesarean section, and wow, it was four babies. So I was like, Raila has come back with such a big swing,” she said.

The family saw the quadruplets as a form of blessing and consolation during their time of mourning.

“They came, not one, not two, but three. Raila, Amolo, and Odinga. And then there was this surprise baby, a baby girl, the tiniest. We decided to name her Ida. It is such a great blessing, and we thank God,” the sister explained.

The sister revealed that the family is facing significant financial and logistical challenges following the birth. She disclosed that the mother already has twins and lives in a rental house, making the arrival of four more children particularly overwhelming.

“She’s my kid sister. She has twins. She lives in a rental house. We have not organized ourselves on our way forward,” she stated.

The family has appealed to well-wishers and the public for any form of assistance to help them navigate this new chapter.

A hospital official confirmed that this was a historic moment for the medical facility, marking the first time they had successfully delivered quadruplets.

“It’s the first time that we delivered quadruplets here. We have been delivering triplets, but this is the first time we have delivered quadruplets here. And we were happy and excited to receive the babies,” the official said.
