The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has hit back at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his letter to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, in which he demanded action against individuals he claimed were threatening violence ahead of the upcoming Mbeere North Constituency by-election.
In a letter addressed to the former DP dated Thursday, November 13, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan dismissed Gachagua’s claims as baseless and driven by imagination.
“We acknowledge your latest public outburst, packaged as a solemn letter to the Inspector General of Police. Foremost, the claims and allegations as well as the names dropped in your letter, including the alleged ‘close associates’ of UDA Chairperson and Embu County Governor Cecily Mbarire as well as Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, only exist in your pregnant imagination,” the letter read.
Omar argued that Gachagua’s letter lacked facts and resembled a satirical drama script, suggesting that the former DP was trying to shift blame as his political fortunes declined.
“Strikingly, the letter reads more like a satirical drama script, so miserably emaciated on facts and bloated on innuendo. Your desperate, diversionary offensive against the National Police Service and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission exposes the predictable floundering of a political personality whose career is appallingly collapsing under the weight of a publicly documented history of misdeeds,” the letter continued.
Omar further accused Gachagua of having a long-standing record of divisive politics, disrespect for leaders, and association with acts of political violence.
He claimed the former Deputy President’s past conduct has left a trail of controversy and misconduct that cannot be ignored.
“The nation has a long memory of how before impeachment and after, you have routinely utilized abusive, insulting and offensive language against leaders who have rejected your polarizing political rhetoric.
“Your public record is exceedingly punctuated by a gruesome tally of political thuggery, violence, looting, and yes, the deeply embarrassing invasion and plunder of the sheep of a former Kenyan Head of State, which remains a permanent emblem of your personal character,” the letter added.
Taking aim at Gachagua’s recent remarks alleging threats to his safety, Omar said the claims were both absurd and ironic.
He questioned Gachagua’s motives for campaigning in Mbeere North for a candidate from another party while his own party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), lacked a candidate in the race.
“Your misguided critique of institutional integrity would carry weight if your own ledger wasn’t already full of familiar acts of felony. This desperation culminated in your sensational allegations that there are plans to prevent you from campaigning by having you castrated upon landing in Mbeere North Constituency.
“The sheer absurdity of this claim is only surpassed by the irony that you are purportedly traveling to Mbeere North to campaign for a candidate who paradoxically belongs to another party, a clear testament that your own DCP Party is hopelessly disorganized to field a viable candidate of its own,” the letter further read.
Omar went further to challenge Gachagua to address allegations of fraud involving a purported parliamentary candidate in Mbeere North.
According to the UDA SG, the DCP Party leader is facing demands from locals to refund money allegedly taken under false pretenses during a nomination process.
“The time for diversion is over. Before engaging in further theatrics, you need to address the brazen scandal where you swindled substantial funds from a prospective Mbeere North Constituency parliamentary candidate under the guise of issuing a DCP Party nomination certificate that was never was.
“A legitimate and enduring demand you face from the people of Mbeere North right now, emanates from the supporters of the parliamentary candidate you defrauded. Their ultimatum is clear, simple, and rooted in justice. As you plan to set foot in Mbeere territory, prepare to refund every penny you swindled from their kinsmen. This is not political opposition; it is a demand for basic financial accountability,” the letter read.
Omar also defended the ruling party’s candidate in the upcoming by-election, Leo Wamuthende, describing him as law-abiding and widely supported in the area.
He also accused Gachagua of attempting to drag Wamuthende into his personal political drama to deflect from his own alleged failings.
“As you grapple with the evolving consequences of your fraudulent political schemes, we caution you against attempting to drag Leo Wamuthende, the UDA Party candidate into your melodramatic reactions. Wamuthende as the name affirms, remains extremely popular among the Mbeere North electorate, who have lawfully and peacefully vowed to stay put in the ruling party, regardless of the vitriolic distractions and propaganda you keep disseminating.
“For the avoidance of doubt, UDA Party does not condone any form of violence whatsoever and has since the declaration of the vacancy of the Mbeere North Constituency seat, conducted its campaigns in absolute tranquility and decorum, with zero incidents of violence recorded,” the letter concluded.
In his letter to Kanja on Wednesday, November 12, Gachagua raised alarm over widely circulated social media videos showing individuals issuing threats of violence ahead of the November 27 polls in Mbeere North.
He identified specific individuals he claims are threatening violence, including Simon Njagi Njiru (alias Gitundu wa Gitundu), Josiah Kariuki Ngari (alias Mtetezi Puff), and Susan Nyaga, among others.
Gachagua stated that these individuals have issued threats of violence against him and Mbeere North residents when he campaigns for his preferred candidate from November 16 to 24, 2025.
“Despite the evidence and information in your custody, the above persons have not been arraigned. We demand that ahead of the by-elections, the above persons must be arrested immediately, arraigned and charged under the penal code,” the letter reads.
The DCP leader further alleged that people appearing in the threatening video are closely associated with senior government officials, specifically naming Mbarire and Ruku.
“We further demand that the people of Mbeere North be allowed to exercise their democratic right to vote a candidate of their choice; no one shall be allowed to force a candidate to the people,” he stated.
Gachagua reminded Kanja of his service to the nation in various capacities, including as the second Deputy President of Kenya, and urged him to fulfill his civic responsibility by addressing the security concerns.
“It will go down in history that you are the only IG in Kenya to have presided over epochs and a total breakdown of the rule of law in Kenya. A criminal charade has taken toll on Kenyans; no one feels safe in our cities or villages as you watch and enjoy full information and power to stop the mess,” he wrote.
Gachagua informed the IG that he will be in Mbeere North Constituency from November 16 to November 24, 2025, to campaign for his preferred candidate as part of his constitutional rights.
He stated that he has credible intelligence that state-sponsored goons harassing him and his supporters have been fully mobilized for Mbeere North ahead of his arrival.
“Further, be informed that we have credible intelligence of the government’s plans to disrupt the electoral process in Mbeere North, a matter that the people of Kenya shall not accept,” he warned.
