Anti-Counterfeit Chairperson to Be Charged in KSh5 Million Bribe Case

According to the DPP, the file, received on 14 November 2025, details allegations that Hon. Kabeabea demanded and received a bribe contrary to Section 6(1)(a) as read with Section 18 of the Anti-Bribery Act, No. 47 of 2023.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has announced that Hon. Josephat Gichunge Mwirabua Kabeabea, the Chairperson of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, will face bribery charges following a review of an inquiry file submitted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

According to the DPP, the file, received on 14 November 2025, details allegations that Hon. Kabeabea demanded and received a bribe contrary to Section 6(1)(a) as read with Section 18 of the Anti-Bribery Act, No. 47 of 2023.

Investigations indicate that Hon. Kabeabea allegedly demanded Ksh5 million from a business proprietor in exchange for halting investigations and refraining from arresting the individual and his employees.

Evidence provided to the DPP shows that Hon. Kabeabea received Ksh150,000 during the transaction.

After conducting a comprehensive review of the inquiry file pursuant to Section 35 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, the DPP concluded that the evidence on record sufficiently established the essential elements of the offence.

The DPP has now directed that Hon. Kabeabea be charged with bribery under Section 6(1)(a) as read with Section 18 of the Anti-Bribery Act.

In its statement, the ODPP reaffirmed its commitment to executing its mandate independently, fairly and strictly in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of Kenya.
