Ex-Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Secures Ksh53 Million Bank Guarantee, Set to Regain Freedom

By Peter John

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is now poised to walk out of Kamiti Maximum Prison after securing a Ksh 53 million bank guarantee, fulfilling a key condition set by the High Court.

This development marks a major step toward his temporary freedom as he continues to navigate multiple legal battles.

During proceedings, Principal Magistrate Rose Ndombi reaffirmed the bond terms previously issued in his offensive conduct case.

However, she made it clear that Waititu’s release hinges on meeting the High Court’s order requiring the Ksh53 million bank guarantee.

According to Waititu, arrangements have already been made, and a third party is prepared to deposit the guarantee on his behalf.

Once the deposit is confirmed, the former governor will remain out of custody while continuing to comply with his earlier bond requirements in a separate hate speech case.

The prosecution has signaled readiness to proceed, with the next hearing in that matter scheduled for January 15, 2026.

Waititu has been incarcerated since February, following his conviction in a KSh 588 million graft case, where he received a 12-year sentence or an alternative fine of Ksh 52.5 million.

The newly secured bank guarantee now offers a pathway for his temporary freedom as his legal team continues to contest the graft conviction and manage the pending cases.

His anticipated release marks yet another high-profile turning point in a long-running legal saga that has kept public attention fixed on the former county boss.

Authorities are expected to process his release once the financial guarantee is verified, paving the way for him to leave Kamiti as he awaits future court dates.
