Two police officers have been reported dead and five others injured after their vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Liboi-Kulan road in Garissa County.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday, November 19, when suspected militants from the Somalia-based terrorist group Al-Shabaab detonated an explosive device targeting a Border Patrol Unit vehicle.

Authorities confirmed that the officers were conducting routine patrol operations when their Land Cruiser was struck by the IED that had been strategically planted along the route.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the vehicle, instantly killing one officer at the scene. A second officer later died from injuries sustained in the blast, while five other personnel were wounded and are receiving medical treatment.

The attack took place near the volatile Kenya-Somalia border, a region frequently infiltrated by militant groups due to its porous nature and challenging terrain.

Security forces have since launched operations in the area to pursue the suspects and enhance surveillance along the border corridor.

In a similar case, two people lost their lives in an IED attack in Ijara, Garissa County, on Monday, July 14.

Area Member of Parliament Abdi Ali Abdi confirmed the early morning assault, which claimed the lives of Mohamed Shabel Bashir and Abdikadir Muhumed Salat in Bodhai, Madah Adon.

“I am deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of this morning in Bodhai, Madah Adon, where a deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attack claimed the lives of Mohamed Shabel Bashir and Abdikadir Muhumed Salat,” the MP said.

Abdi strongly denounced the assault and emphasized the continuous danger that militant violence poses to communities in the region.

“This senseless act of violence is a painful reminder of the persistent threats facing our communities and underscores the urgent need to safeguard the lives of our citizens,” he added.

The legislator called on security agencies to respond with urgency and ensure those responsible face justice.

“I urge our national and regional security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he added.
