Veteran Examiner Dies During National Exam Marking at Machakos Centre

Nicodemus Mutuku, a veteran teacher and examiner, has died while marking national exam papers at the Machakos Girls High School marking centre. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed the incident occurred on Monday morning.

Mutuku had been stationed at the centre since November 7th, serving as a team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper. In a statement, KNEC Chief Executive David Njengere described him as a “committed professional” and a “highly dependable officer,” noting his “invaluable” contributions to national assessments over many years.

“He was an experienced, diligent teacher, and we have, indeed, lost a gem,” Njengere stated, conveying the council’s condolences to Mutuku’s family and colleagues. KNEC has pledged to support the family during this period.

Mutuku was a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makueni County. His death is the second recent tragedy to hit Kenya’s education sector, following a road accident last week that claimed the lives of four KCSE candidates.
