South African amapiano stars Major League DJz have issued a strongly worded statement to Kenyan fans, insisting they have no connection to the forthcoming The Afters KE African Music Festival in Mombasa and accusing unnamed promoters of using their name without permission.
In a post published on Tuesday, the twins Bandile and Banele Mbere declared that a recent event circulating online “had no involvement from us. We had no agreement, no site visit and no communication with the promoters behind it. In fact, we’ve never even heard of them.” They added that any payments made in their name were automatically rejected by foreign exchange controls, over which they claim to have no influence.
The duo revealed they are deliberately delaying their Kenyan debut until 2026 to deliver what they call “the full Balcony Mix Africa experience” with production standards matching their South African shows.
Hours earlier, three Kenyan entertainment companies released a joint rebuttal accusing Major League DJz and their management of a repeated pattern of contractual breaches spanning four years. The Afters KE, 6AM Entertainment and The Human Discretion Company listed three cancelled events, including the upcoming 12 to 13 December festival at Fort Jesus Museum, claiming the DJs accepted full or partial fees yet failed to appear on each occasion.
The promoters say they provided business class travel and met all logistical demands, only to suffer significant financial losses and public disappointment. They state that for the December festival the DJs have already received fifty percent of the fee but now refuse either to perform or to refund the money.
The companies have announced they are jointly pursuing legal action to recover funds and damages, describing the behaviour as “a recurring pattern of professional misconduct” that has damaged trust in Kenya’s live music sector.
As the war of words escalates, Kenyan fans who have waited years for a Major League DJz performance are left uncertain whether the promised 2026 visit will finally materialise or become the latest in a lengthening line of broken commitments.
