Are ‘immense’ Arsenal most formidable team in Europe?

Arsenal’s outstanding form this season continues to build momentum. Across all competitions, the Gunners have won 16 matches, drawn two, and lost just once—a level of consistency they haven’t shown in years.

Their Champions League campaign has been equally impressive. Arsenal have won their opening five matches for the first time since their memorable 2005–06 run, when they reached their only final. They are the only team left with a 100% record in the competition this season, and their victory over Bayern Munich ended a five-game winless streak against the German champions dating back to 2015.

Former Arsenal and England defender Matt Upson reflected on the team’s transformation on BBC Radio 5 Live:

“The confidence is there for Arsenal—you can feel it simmering. Even when they have spells where they’re not at their best, the foundation is so strong that their level never really drops.
Before, Arsenal could be exhilarating one week and flat the next.
Now, they’re consistently at least a 7/10, and sometimes they hit a 9/10. They’re just churning out performances.”

The win over Bayern—who were unbeaten this season and had lost only three of their previous 52 Champions League group-stage matches (W45, D4)—was a statement.
Manager Mikel Arteta praised both the collective and individual efforts:

We started the week well with the win over Spurs, and this is another massive victory—but now we recover, have a nice dinner, and tomorrow we start preparing for Stamford Bridge.”

“I have to praise our players. They were incredible against, in my opinion, the best team in Europe.

Individually, we were immense in dealing with everything they bring. The margins are so small at this level.

Midfielder Declan Rice, named UEFA’s Player of the Match, echoed the sentiment:

“Bayern have been the best team in Europe this season. Tactically, this was probably our toughest game.
We went man-to-man in the second half and were outstanding. The manager is delighted—it was a special European night.
It definitely feels different to last season. There are so many leaders in the team now. We’re taking it one game at a time with real hunger and desire. There’s a long way to go, so we’re not getting carried away.”
