Jubilee Party deputy leader Fred Matiang’i took aim at President William Ruto, accusing him of being drunk with power and neglecting the interests of the people.
He condemned the teargas attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at a church service in Nairobi, calling it an attempt to stifle democracy.
“What happened to Gachagua is a big shame we dont even know what to say. We want to tell the government that politics is like a market let everyone sell their tomatos whoever wins the customer gets to go home happy and the other one if he lied in 2022, will have to go home empty handed. Kama wananchi wanakataa unaenda nyumbani vizuri, sio kuleta vifaru, mandege, polisi”
Speaking during a thanksgiving service at ACK St. Peter’s Cathedral in Kenol, Murang’a South, on Sunday, November 30, 2025, Matiang’i said the nation is headed in the wrong direction due to poor leadership.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the crowd scattered. Four people were injured in the melee, including one man who was stabbed while assisting a relative. Police responded with teargas and live ammunition to disperse the attackers.
Several churchgoers took refuge inside the building while others sustained injuries and property damage. The wounded were taken to Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital, with one patient later transferred to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for further treatment.
Matiang’i, who is part of the united opposition, stressed that it will be up to Kenyans to decide whether to give him a chance in the 2027 election.
“I am ready and willing to fix this country because I know where the problem lies,” he said, adding that his experience as a former cabinet secretary has equipped him to identify government loopholes that have contributed to Kenya’s challenges.
“If I am given the chance, I promise I won’t fail the people and my country because I want to see it rise to greatness again,” he added.
Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni said the party, under the mandate of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is campaigning across the country to promote Matiang’i as a capable leader. Kioni praised Matiang’i’s track record and leadership experience, stressing that the former president believes he can deliver if given the opportunity to lead.
