Laura Woods Taken Ill During ITV Coverage of England Women’s Friendly

ITV presenter Laura Woods fell ill while covering England’s women’s friendly against Ghana on Tuesday night, prompting an on-air switch to colleague Katie Shanahan.

The 38-year-old collapsed shortly after the broadcast began at St Mary’s Stadium and was supported by pundits Ian Wright and Anita Asante before the camera cut to a wider shot of the teams warming up.

After a brief moment of silence, ITV4 went to an advert break, returning with Shanahan stepping in to continue coverage. She reassured viewers that Woods was receiving care and wished her a speedy recovery.

Shanahan told the audience, “As you have probably noticed we don’t have the wonderful Laura Woods because she’s just been taken ill but she’s in very good hands so I’m stepping in at late notice.”

During the half-time segment, Shanahan reiterated that Woods was well cared for and added, “As you may all be aware, Laura Woods fell ill at the start of the programme but we want to reassure you she is doing okay. We all send her our love.”

Following England’s 2-0 victory, Shanahan again updated viewers, emphasising Woods’ wellbeing.

Woods’ fiancé, Adam Collard, provided a further update on social media, writing, “Laura is all ok and with the right people. Thank you for all of your kind messages.” Collard, a former Love Island contestant, reassured fans that Woods was receiving appropriate care.

Woods has become a familiar face on ITV’s coverage of the Lionesses, having presented during the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the Euro 2025 tournament.

Her collapse during Tuesday’s friendly prompted an outpouring of support from viewers and colleagues alike, highlighting the pressures and unpredictability of live sports broadcasting.

ITV has not provided additional details regarding Woods’ condition but has expressed gratitude to viewers for their understanding and concern. The network’s quick on-air response ensured continuity of coverage while prioritising the presenter’s safety.
