The Ministry of Roads and Transport has announced the official open of the newly completed 66-kilometre Ngong-Suswa Highway.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 3, the State Department for Roads said the project was designed to improve mobility out of Nairobi through Ngong and enhance connections to towns along the route.

“The 66km Ngong-Suswa Highway is now open! A smoother, safer, and more direct route out of Nairobi through Ngong – perfect for travelers, transporters, and road-trip lovers. Scenic views, faster connections, and fresh opportunities along the corridor,” the statement read.

According to the State Department for Roads, the new corridor provides relief from the busy Mai Mahiu escarpment road, ensuring smoother journeys and improved safety standards.

The highway is expected to transform connectivity across the region, unlocking opportunities for trade, tourism, and community growth along its route.

“With scenic views and open stretches, the road is set to become a favourite for road-trip enthusiasts, combining convenience with an enjoyable driving experience,” the statement added.

The State Department for Roads added that local businesses and communities anticipate increased economic activity as the new link enhances accessibility and reduces travel time.

The completion of the Ngong–Suswa Highway marks a significant step in strengthening regional integration and opening new horizons for travelers and traders alike.

This comes days after Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo provided an update on the ongoing rehabilitation of the Kakamega Airstrip.

In a statement on Monday, December 1, Omollo explained that the airstrip is currently undergoing significant improvements aimed at upgrading its key operational components.

“The Kakamega Airstrip is undergoing a major upgrade, including the rehabilitation of the runway, taxiways and apron,” he said.

Omollo explained that the expansion will allow the airstrip to handle more aircraft and increased air traffic once the project is completed.

“Once complete, the expanded facility will accommodate more domestic and commercial flights, boosting connectivity and opening up the county to greater trade and tourism opportunities,” he added.

Omollo further noted that the investment in the airstrip is part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic activity at the county level.

“This strategic investment by the government is set to create new jobs, stimulate local businesses and strengthen Kakamega’s role as a vibrant hub for economic growth,” he further said.

Omollo added that the initiative is already advancing steadily, noting that the works currently underway mark a significant step toward a modernised facility.

“The rehabilitation works, launched by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto in October 2025, are currently underway, bringing us closer to a modern, fully functional air transport gateway,” he concluded.
