The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced two strategic executive appointments approved by the KRA Board, effective January 12, 2026.
This comes as the authority intensifies its organisational transformation, technology modernisation, and evidence-based tax policy agenda.
According to the press release dated December 11, 2025, the authority made two key appointments on commissioner for business strategy, technology and enterprise modernisation and the appointment of a commissioner for, tax research and analysis unit.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is pleased to announce two strategic executive appointments as the institution accelerates its organisational transformation, technology modernisation, and evidence-driven tax policy agenda,” the authority stated.
Mr. Nyakeri is the first KRA commissioner from the Kisii community. The move is seen as part of the ethnic balancing at the tax agency.
KRA emphasised that the appointments underscore its commitment to strengthening digital transformation and deepening analytical excellence.
“These appointments reflect KRA’s continued commitment to strengthening digital transformation, deepening analytical and forecasting excellence, and advancing the next phase of administrative and policy reforms,” the release added.
Brian Omooria Nyakeri has been appointed as Commissioner for Business Strategy, Technology, and Enterprise Modernisation. With over 20 years of private-sector experience, Nyakeri has led major digital transformation initiatives at global and regional organisations.
He most recently served as Lead Consultant and Chief Technology Officer at Agile Cloud Limited.
“Nyakeri holds an Executive Master of Business Administration from the South African Development Centre/IBM Institute for Business Value and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Systems Engineering from Africa Nazarene University.”
“He is certified in cloud architecture, data strategy, systems engineering, and enterprise design, and is a member of the Computer Society of Kenya and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association.”
At the same time, Mr. Alex Kimani Mwangi has been appointed Commissioner of the newly established Tax Research and Analysis Unit (TR&A).
The unit will function as KRA’s central hub for research, modelling, forecasting, and evidence-based tax policy analysis. It is mandated to lead Kenya’s tax reform analytics, provide empirical insights to the National Treasury, and enhance KRA’s internal research capacity through data-driven approaches.
Mwangi, a KRA veteran since 2002, most recently served as Acting Commissioner, Business Strategy, Technology and Enterprise Modernisation (March–December 2025).
“He previously acted as Commissioner, Strategy, Innovation and Risk Management, and held the position of Deputy Commissioner, Research, Knowledge Management and Corporate Planning. He holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the University of Nairobi and has received specialised training in Tax Policy and Administration at Japan’s National Tax College,” read the press release in part.
He is a Certified Ethics and Integrity Practitioner and a member of the Royal Statistical Society and the Economics Society of Kenya.
KRA congratulated both appointees and urged taxpayers and stakeholders to extend continued support as it works to deliver efficient, fair and transparent revenue mobilisation for national development.
