Hon. Justice Mohammed Khadhar Ibrahim holds the distinction of being the first Somali North Eastern resident to see the inside of Nyayo House Chambers.
And the narrowed honour of being the first native of the Somali community to be appointed, on merit, as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Meet Justice Mohammed. The giant who elected not to hide his love for uji whisky. Baptized so by the 4th President of Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Justice Mohammed openly enjoyed his drink at various outlets in Kenya, despite his religion inhibiting consumption.
A staunch Muslim, the judge elected not to hide this habit and openly shared the beer counter with revelers at members clubs.
Sadly, the habit metamorphosised into an illness, which he battled and possibly killed him.
He spent a few evenings at a members club along Ngong Road with Raila Odinga, a buddy in the trenches during the Moi terror days.
The duo enjoyed a tipple as they spoke in low tones, only them aware of the topic of discussion.
Professionally, Justice Mohammed served at the High Court before he joined the Court of Appeal, then the Supreme Court.
During his stint at the High Court, lawyers complained about delayed judgments and rulings, but none of these found their way to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
At the Supreme Court, he presided over three presidential disputed ballots, two for Uhururuto and Ruto. Raila was the petitioner in all the cases.
In 2017, he was taken ill during the proceedings, and the cases were decided without his input.
