A train driver was killed and at least 40 people were injured in a head-on collision involving two trains near Peru’s iconic Machu Picchu on Tuesday.

A train driver was killed and at least 40 people were injured in a head-on collision involving two trains near Peru’s iconic Machu Picchu on Tuesday.

According to a statement from local authorities, the crash occurred on the single-track railway leading to the ancient Inca site.

Emergency services dispatched 20 ambulances to the scene, and the injured were transferred to medical facilities in the nearby city of Cusco.

The U.S. Embassy in Peru confirmed that American citizens were among those hurt, though police have not yet released the identities of anyone involved in the incident.
