Lugari MP Nabwera Sues Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula Over Defamation Claims

By Andrew Kariuki

Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Daraja Nabwera has issued a formal legal demand to Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Angatia Savula, accusing him of making defamatory and misleading statements during a public event in November 2025.

In a demand letter dated January 14, 2026, Nabwera’s lawyers allege that Savula made damaging remarks about the MP while addressing mourners at the burial of the late Munyuki Secondary School principal, Simon Isiaho Shange, in Likuyani Sub-County.

The statements are said to have linked Nabwera to the principal’s accidental death and included references to sensitive personal matters.

According to the letter, the remarks were made before a large public audience and later circulated widely, allegedly causing reputational harm to the MP locally and beyond.

The legal team argues that the statements were inaccurate, politically motivated and violated Nabwera’s right to dignity and privacy.

The demand requires Savula to issue a public apology within six hours of receiving the notice, withdraw the statements and acknowledge that commenting on matters linked to ongoing legal proceedings could amount to sub judice.

The MP is also seeking compensation amounting to Ksh 100 million for alleged damage to his reputation and career.

The letter further warns that failure to comply with the demands will result in legal action, including civil proceedings, at Savula’s personal cost.

Nabwera maintains that the claims made against him are false and insists he is prepared to submit himself to independent verification to disprove the allegations raised publicly.
