One Killed in Tanker Explosion on Southern Bypass

Police and emergency service teams have been deployed along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi after a fuel tanker caught fire following a road accident.

The incident on Saturday, January 24, has resulted in confusion and chaos along the busy road near the Wilson Airport.

The fuel tanker reportedly collided with a truck before exploding into flames, producing thick black smoke that reduced visibility along the roadway.

Police and fire response teams from the Kenya Airports Authority at Wilson Airport have been dispatched to the scene to contain the fire and manage traffic. 

According to the Kenya Red Cross, access to the area has been restricted to ensure safety while emergency operations are ongoing.

Police closed the busy Southern bypass to manage the fire that billowed to the sky and threatened the nearby structures.

“The highway has been temporarily closed. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes,” they stated.

Motorists are advised to follow alternative routes until the highway is reopened. Traffic management measures have been put in place around the incident area.

It has since been confirmed that one of the drivers involved in the accident died. Authorities have not released further details regarding the identity of the deceased or the condition of other individuals involved.
