The Inspector General of the National Police Service (IG-NPS), Douglas Kanja, has come out explaining details of a closed-door meeting with United Opposition leaders demanding an upholding of the law by police officers.
In a statement by the National Police Service on Friday, January 30, 2026, Kanja confirmed his meeting with the leadership of the United Opposition in his office.
According to the National Police Service, the officers present alongside IG Kanja were Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat, and Deputy Inspector General, Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli.
Kanja revealed that the United Opposition leaders presented to him a petition which he promised to carefully look into.
On his part, Kanja acknowledged, explaining to the United Opposition leaders the National Police Service’s position of political neutrality and its commitment to serve all Kenyans equally and without fear or favour.
“He received a petition from the leaders and promised to carefully look into it. The IG reiterated the Service’s position of political neutrality and its commitment to serve all Kenyans equally and without fear or favour,” NPS said.

After holding talks with the team, Kanja explained the role of the leaders in ensuring that police officers were alerted to any meetings or visits to any part of the country for the purpose of enhancing security coverage.
“Moreover, he reminded the leaders of their obligation to ensure police were alerted to any meetings or visits to any part of the country for the purpose of enhancing security coverage,” NPS added.
Furthermore, the police boss asked leaders to ensure there was maximum cooperation between them and the police for efficient and effective investigations and follow-ups whenever an incident was reported.
While wrapping up the meeting, the National Police Service confirmed that the team acknowledged that any incident must be officially reported and booked as per the law.
“The IG and the leaders agreed that any incident must be officially reported and booked as per the law,” NPS explained.
In addition, Kanja assured the leaders he was looking forward to more open and positive collaboration and feedback between them and the police.
Worth noting, the opposition leaders were led by the Wiper Patriotic Front party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and included the DCP leader, Rigathi Gachagua; the People’s Liberation Party leader, Martha Karua; the Democratic Party leader, Justin Muturi; and the Democratic Action Party-Kenya leader, Hon. Eugene Wamalwa.
Others present were Nyandarua Senator, John Methu, and the DCP deputy party leader, Cleophas Malala.
The meeting came after a chaotic church service in Othaya, where Gachagua and worshippers were forced to flee for safety
