Uhuru, Gachagua handshake: Kalonzo Musyoka brokers handshake between Uhuru and Gachagua

The deal was reportedly reached in Nigeria early last month, with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo playing a pivotal role in mediating talks between the two leaders.

Reports as of February 3, 2026, indicate that Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has successfully brokered a political “handshake” between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The deal was reportedly reached in Nigeria early last month, with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo playing a pivotal role in mediating talks between the two leaders.

The reconciliation is aimed at consolidating the Mt. Kenya vote and crafting a formidable opposition united against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sources indicate that a formal, public handshake ceremony is tentatively scheduled for mid-February 2026.

This move follows earlier efforts by Kalonzo Musyoka to forge a broader coalition including Martha Karua and Fred Matiang’i to address national challenges.

Rigathi Gachagua, now leader of the DCP party, has reportedly expressed a willingness for a truce, acknowledging that he was previously misled into fighting his long-time friend, Uhuru Kenyatta.
