Two suspects have been arrested in Makindu, Makueni County, following a late-night intelligence-led operation that uncovered an alleged illegal donkey slaughtering syndicate in Kamboo sub-location.
Area chief Jackson Kimende said the raid was conducted at around 12:30am after authorities received a tip-off about suspicious activity in a nearby forest.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a grisly scene, with at least 20 donkeys already slaughtered.
Several individuals believed to be part of the syndicate fled into the forest as police moved in, escaping arrest.
Authorities also intercepted a vehicle suspected to have been used to transport the meat. The vehicle was found being loaded at the site, but the driver managed to escape.
Police noted that the rear number plate of the vehicle had been removed, raising further suspicion about the operation.
The two suspects arrested during the raid are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Local authorities have condemned the incident, terming it part of a growing concern over illegal donkey slaughtering, which has been linked to the black market trade in donkey meat and skins.
Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the individuals who fled the scene, while urging members of the public to report any suspicious activities.
The raid underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to crack down on illegal livestock slaughter and protect farmers from losses associated with such criminal activities.
