The National Police Service has confirmed the deaths of two people following violent clashes that broke out near Ishihara Level 4 Hospital in Embu County on April 14, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General, police said the incident began as a planned peaceful demonstration by members of the Evurore Ward community, who had earlier notified authorities of their intention to protest conditions at the hospital.
However, according to the statement, the situation escalated after the protest was allegedly infiltrated by individuals who were not part of the original group. The Service noted that what started as a peaceful gathering “degenerated into criminal acts and violence,” resulting in injuries to several bystanders and destruction of property, including vandalized businesses.
Police say officers moved in to restore order but were met with resistance from what they described as criminal elements armed with crude weapons such as stones and other projectiles. The confrontation, they indicated, made it clear that the demonstration had been “hijacked by individuals who were never interested in peaceful protests, law or order.”
The National Police Service expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, stating that “any loss of life is something that the Service takes great exception to, as one life lost is one too many.”
Authorities have confirmed that investigations into the incident are underway, with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) already notified to ensure transparency and accountability in the process. The police have pledged full cooperation with IPOA as inquiries continue.
Members of the public with information that may assist investigations have been urged to report to the nearest police station or use official communication channels, including toll-free numbers and anonymous reporting platforms.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order, while calling for public cooperation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
