Traffic was temporarily disrupted along Limuru Road, near City Park Market, as boda boda operators blocked the busy road in a fresh wave of demonstrations on Monday, May 25.
By Monday afternoon, a section of Limuru Road was rendered impassable as more than 100 operators blocked it, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Bodaboda riders were first spotted in Westlands hours earlier, riding toward Nairobi’s Central Business District to protest alleged harassment by county government enforcement officers.
Images obtained by Uzalendo News show hundreds of people gathered along the route, with no vehicles in sight, and congestion building along adjacent feeder routes.Â
Limuru Road is an important artery in the Nairobi metropolitan area, serving as a critical commercial, residential, and agricultural corridor.
It bridges Nairobi’s CBD with the affluent diplomatic zones of Gigiri and the expansive tea-producing region of Kiambu.
Notably, the protests were largely peaceful, with boda boda operators primarily intent on making their grievances regarding county officials heard.
The demonstrations were part of a series of protests which were quietly planned for Monday, May 25 in Nairobi and its environs.
In Thika, areas including Wetheithie, Kiandutu, Juja and Ruiru saw temporary traffic disruptions, as protests over fuel prices dominated the areas on Monday morning.Â
Separately, along the Southern bypass from Ole Sereni, there were isolated protests as some rowdy youth blocked the highway and attacked motorists.
Similar incidents have been reported in Embu and Nyahururu, where businesses were indefinitely closed and transport was paralysed, with residents protesting over the high fuel prices the country has been grappling with.
In Embu, for instance, motorists were forced to pull their vehicles out of the route since protesters were seen stoning any vehicle that was in sight.
As of the time of publishing this story, no security body or transport body has responded to the ongoing disruptions.
