Yaya Touré appointed Slovan Bratislava manager on three-year deal

By Bonface Mulyungi

Ivorian football legend Yaya Touré has been appointed head coach of Slovan Bratislava, taking on the first senior managerial role of his coaching career.

The Slovak club confirmed the former Ivory Coast international has signed a three-year contract, opening a new chapter for one of Africa’s most decorated footballers.

Touré’s appointment marks a significant milestone in his transition from elite player to coach. Since retiring from professional football, the former midfielder has gained experience in a variety of coaching environments, working within academy structures and serving on several technical staffs as he prepared for a future in management.

His most notable recent role came alongside Italian coach Roberto Mancini with the Saudi Arabia national team, where he continued to develop his coaching credentials while learning at international level.

Now, the 42-year-old will take charge of a team in his own right for the first time, assuming full responsibility for sporting matters and leading Slovan Bratislava into a new era.

The move represents a major step in Touré’s post-playing career. Widely regarded as one of the greatest African footballers of his generation, the former midfielder enjoyed a glittering career at both club and international level before turning his attention to coaching.

After spending several years building experience behind the scenes, he now faces the challenge of translating that knowledge into success as a head coach.

Touré expressed his excitement after the announcement, making clear his enthusiasm for the opportunity and his eagerness to begin working with the squad.

The former Ivorian star said he is looking forward to starting this new adventure and taking charge of preparations from the opening days of training.

His arrival is expected to generate considerable interest among supporters, given his reputation as one of the most accomplished players to emerge from Africa.

The appointment also highlights the growing number of former elite footballers moving into senior coaching positions after completing their playing careers.

For Slovan Bratislava, the decision signals a commitment to a new project under a coach embarking on his first experience in the top job.

As preparations begin for the upcoming campaign, all eyes will be on Touré as he takes his first steps as a head coach and attempts to build a successful managerial career to match his achievements on the pitch.
