BBI ruling — Mombasa Business Now Wants Politicians Arrested For BBI Funds

Only days after a five-judge bench declared that the constitutional amendment Bill(BBI) was illegal, now Mombasa business people wants Kenyans to hold top cream politicians accountable over what they said was  BBI wastage of public funds.

The high court ruling last week that BBI was illegal has thrown the country into political confusion after a vigorous campaign for Kenyans to adopt the constitutional changes as the country slides towards next year general election.

Led by Fast action Business Community Chairperson Salim Karama the Mombasa business community said the law must take its course and bring all those mastered the wastage of tax payers’ money.

“The ruling by the court is well and timely however we are worried whether the government will stick to the ruling. These key politicians should be held accountable for the whole BBI process. A lot of funds that would have been used for other beneficial projects to Kenyans was wasted,” he said.

He attributed the steady increase of fuel prices to the millions of public cash injected in the BBI process.

Mr Karama said the economic crunch currently being witnessed is a deliberate attempt to push for their 2022 political agenda at the expense of ‘too tired Kenyans,”

Mr Karama also asked the government to come clear on some conditions it has given to Lamu residents over the Lamu port, adding that some of the government conditions have a hidden agenda to the people of Lamu.

“There are so many conditions the government has set in to the residents of Lamu amidst the start of the operations of the Lamu port. But we understand that the registering of Lamu boat owners and fishermen is a requirement and has been adhered to. That we are asked again to register has casted doubts on our side as residents,” he said.

Another trader Addan Mohammed, hailed the judges adding that the ruling seeks to ease the tax burden to Kenyans adding that the law is binding and politicians should not take Kenyans for granted as the country nears the 2022 elections.

“The BBI was a burden to Kenyans and the judges perhaps in their ruling took the faiths of many Kenyans currently suffering economic meltdown. It must be known that politicians always want to take advantage of us,” Mr Mohamed said.
