Former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga will travel to Canada to fly back exiled activist Miguna Miguna.
The retired CJ, widely regarded as the father of social activism in Kenya will airlift Miguna on 16th November 2021.
Miguna, who branded President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga despots was deported after he swore the latter as the people’s President in 2017.
During a Citizen TV Show last week, Dr. Mutunga castigated the Government for deporting Miguna despite a court order barring the same.
It is highly anticipated that Miguna will be paid millions in compensation by courts when he sues the Government for deporting him.
Miguna, a Kenyan of Luo descent has Canadian citizenship.
A former Njiris High School Alumni, Miguna is a bare-knuckled activist with a flair for taking on the high and mighty.
How Miguna Was Deported
Authorities broke into the airport toilet where Miguna was being kept and forcibly injected him with a chemical, causing him to pass unconscious, according to a Facebook post by Miguna.
Kenyan authorities did not respond immediately, despite the country’s immigration department reposting a message urging the public to disregard rumors that Miguna had been sedated or drugged.
The expulsion put an end to the Nairobi airport drama, in which Miguna blogged from the “Toilet at Terminal 2,” claiming he had been held in “filthy” facilities at the country’s main airport without food or access to lawyers.
Hours before he was deported, a High Court judge declared Kenya’s interior minister, national police chief and permanent secretary for immigration in contempt of court for disregarding an order to immediately release Miguna, said another lawyer, Nelson Havi.
Miguna had been deported to Canada last month in a crackdown on politicians who attended the mock inauguration of opposition leader Raila Odinga to protest President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.
A court later ordered that Miguna’s Kenyan passport be restored and that he be allowed to return.
He has enjoyed a love-hate relationship with Raila…but has an ego that makes him impossible to retain on Government employment formally.
A law barrister, the activist will milk the publicity that will accrue from his homecoming.
