Stakeholders from Kenya and the UK government have launched the Vijana Kazini Initiative to help the Government and Corporates get young people who miss out on job opportunities into work or business.

Speaking at a roundtable session held at the Kenya School of Government, UK the Deputy British High Commissioner Josephine Gauld said the initiative will tackle challenges among young people.

“We are committed to supporting young people to find livelihood opportunities and prosper in their personal and professional lives. We also collectively understand that there are many challenges and obstacles to identifying, reaching, and engaging with these young people.” she added.

According to statistics gathered by the Global Opportunity Youth Network, Mombasa, approximately 44% of young people aged 15-34 are unemployed in Mombasa, while an additional 22% claim inconsistent livelihoods through informal and/or temporary employment.

Chief Administrative Secretary – Ministry of ICT, Maureen Mbaka said the initiative is a lifeline to the youth, urging them to take up such government initiatives.

“The Government of Kenya has in place several programs tailored for all the youth of Kenya aimed at empowering the Youth of the country. We have sought to help empower the Kenyan youth by enabling them to create opportunities for themselves and prosper using the internet as a source of livelihood.”

The #VijanaKazini Initiative is meant to offer a platform to multi-sectoral partners that will focus on harnessing and sharing collective knowledge of the complex challenges faced by young people in Kenya.
