Ambassador Martin Kimani, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has criticised racism in the Russia-Ukraine crisis response.

Amb Kimani stated during the 11th UN General Assembly emergency session on the Ukraine situation on Tuesday that various African and Caribbean states have received complaints from their citizens that they have been handled in a racist and demeaning manner at several border crossings.

“The mistreatment of African people on Europe’s borders needs to cease immediately. Whether to the Africans fleeing Ukraine or to those crossing the Mediterranean,”

Kimani said it is upsetting to see racism characterize solidarity expression in areas of Europe, accusing certain famous persons of expressing solidarity in ‘shockingly’ racial terms through media channels.

“We wholeheartedly condemn such racism against Africans and people of African descent. We reject racism at all times and in all places for its inhumanity, at the very same time as we denounce the illegal and inhuman nature of the war in Ukraine,” he stated.

His statement comes after videos of various citizens being denied entry onto a train to a neighbouring country.
